Globally, Mumbai stands third in terms of billionaires

New Delhi: Mumbai, the commercial hub of the country, has emerged as the Asian capital of billionaires, pushing back Beijing. While Mumbai produced 28 billionaires so far this year, an average of over 7 super rich in a month, the Chinese capital’s record is 18 in the period.

In all, Mumbai hosts 92 billionaires as against Beijing’s 91.

However, overall, China is far ahead of India with 814 billionaires, while the latter has only 271, according to Global Rich List.

Globally, Mumbai stands third in terms of billionaires, after New Your, which has the most billionaires – 119, followed by London with 97 as per the list.

The combined wealth of total billionaires in Mumbai is estimated at $445 billion, a 47 per cent increase from the previous year. On the other hand, Beijing’s total billionaire wealth stands at $264, a 28 per cent decrease.

The main slice of Mumbai billionaires comes mainly from energy and pharmaceuticals. Among them, Mukesh Ambani further widened the contours of his wealth during the period with significant gains in his business. But real estate player Mangal Prabhat Lodha is Mumbai’s biggest wealth gainer in percentage terms (116%)

Indian billionaires saw a slight drop in world ranking while Mukesh Ambani maintained his stronghold at 10th position attributed to Reliance Industries. Gautham Adani stood at 15th position – a rise of eight positions while HCL’s Shiv Nadar and his family ranked up 16 places to 34. Serum Institute’s Cyrus S Poonawalla experienced a modest decrease and is down 9 places to 55 with a total wealth of $82 billion.

More in this list include: Sun Pharmaceuticals Dilip Shangvi ( 61st position), and Kumar Mangalam Birla (100th position). Radhkishn Damani moved up eight places to the 100th position.
