Markets gather more momentum, indices chip in more gains

Sensex up 250 points, crosses 74,000-mark, Nifty 50 adds 72 points at 22,440

Mumbai: Benchmark indices were holding gains on Wednesday backed by upbeat cues from global peers.

The S&P BSE Sensex was up 250 points, topping 74,000-mark, while the NSE Nifty 50 was up 72 points at 22,440.

Bharti Airtel, Tata Steel and NTPC were the prominent movers among the Sensex 30 shares. Hindustan Unilever and Axis Bank traded on a flat note ahead of Q4 earnings today.

In the broader markets, the BSE SmallCap index advanced nearly 1 per cent to hit a fresh record high of 46,912.

Among sectors, the Nifty Metal, and Healthcare indices were up 1 per cent each, followed by the Nifty Realty index (up 0.9 per cent).
