NEW DELHI: Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have jointly established a Rs500 crore welfare trust to support victims and families affected by the recent Air India plane crash.
The trust, named The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust, has been formally registered in Mumbai.
Each entity – Tata Sons and Tata Trusts – will contribute Rs250 crore to the trust. The fund will be used for various humanitarian initiatives, including an ex gratia payment of Rs1 crore to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
In addition to financial assistance to bereaved families, the trust will also extend medical support to passengers who suffered serious injuries.
A portion of the funds will go towards the reconstruction of the B J Medical College Hostel, which was damaged in the Air India crash.
The Air India flight, AI-171, was enroute from Ahmedabad to London when it crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, killing 260 people, including 19 on the ground. The tragedy has sparked a nationwide outpouring of grief and prompted calls for tighter aviation safety protocols.
Tata Group, which owns Air India, said the initiative is a mark of respect and solidarity with those affected, and underlines its long-standing commitment to social responsibility.
