DUBAI:  DP World, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) have signed  a deal with Nevomo to explore the development and implementation of a pilot project utilising Nevomo’s proprietary MagRail technology to enable self-propelled movement of rail-based cargo within existing port ecosystems in India.

The strategic union underscores a shared commitment to revolutionise cargo handling through technological innovation, enhancing both efficiency and sustainability.

The collaboration will demonstrate how MagRail technology can automate short-haul cargo transfers, reduce reliance on diesel vehicles, and improve yard efficiency. The pilot project at Deendayal Port aims to set new standards in efficiency and sustainability, showcasing how innovation can transform ports into engines of economic growth and global trade competitiveness.

DP World, recognised globally for its expertise in smart end-to-end supply chain solutions, is spearheading efforts to introduce cutting-edge freight technologies to India. By leveraging advanced systems such as MagRail, DP World seeks to transform traditional modalities of cargo movement, accelerating port operations and improving the speed and reliability of freight transportation.

Addressing critical challenges

The Deendayal Port Authority, a pivotal multi-cargo port governed by the Government of India, plays an instrumental role by facilitating the pilot’s exploration at its Kandla terminal. The initiative, therefore, not only reflects a convergence of global and local expertise but also aligns directly with national aspirations.

The partnership is emblematic of India’s broader commitment to modernising its logistics infrastructure as envisioned under the National Logistics Policy and the PM Gati Shakti initiative.

By enhancing port-hinterland connectivity, the project aims to address critical challenges such as capacity constraints, operational inefficiencies, and environmental concerns.

The pilot project, spanning 750 meters within Deendayal Port, will demonstrate MagRail’s capability to autonomously transport freight using electric-powered wagons driven by linear motor technology.

Future-proofing terminals

The innovation is expected to significantly boost the movement of containerised and bulk cargo, concurrently reducing operational costs and carbon emissions, thereby rendering the logistics ecosystem greener, faster, and more interoperable.

Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of DPA, emphasised how this collaboration represents a strategic advancement in port infrastructure to support increasing cargo demands while strengthening India’s logistics framework and trade facilitation.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, underscored the company’s dedication to future-proofing terminals through innovation, reducing transit times, and enhancing sustainability.

Rizwan Soomar, CEO & Managing Director of DP World for the Middle East, North Africa, and India Subcontinent, highlighted that transformative infrastructure requires collaboration and long-term commitment, positioning this partnership as a cornerstone for accelerating India’s ambitions of port-led logistics integration and carbon neutrality.

Przemek (Ben) Paczek, CEO of Nevomo Group, expressed pride in demonstrating MagRail’s potential to enhance freight efficiency and operational flexibility within a live port environment.
