DUBAI: Emirates Transport, the foremost transport provider in the UAE, has taken a significant step towards sustainable mobility through a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Al Ghurair Motors.

Thes collaboration will pilot test hydrogen and electric commercial vehicles, marking a pivotal moment in the UAE’s journey towards integrating alternative fuel sources within its transportation network.

The agreement emphasises the nations’ commitment to fostering innovation in sustainable transportation technologies. By assessing the viability of these electric and hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, Emirates Transport aims to align its operations with the UAE’s ambitious goals of transitioning to electric vehicles, with a target of achieving a 50% fleet composed of electric vehicles by 2050.

The initiative not only addresses the urgent need for emission reduction but also supports the UAE’s strategic objective of reaching net zero by the same year.

Emirates Transport’s operational capacity, characterised by a fleet of over 32,000 vehicles, places it at the forefront of this transformative initiative.

Eco-friendly transportation

The pilot projects, which will serve various clients across business, government, and public sectors, are critical to demonstrating the practicality of sustainable transport solutions. Furthermore, the technical training provided by Al Ghurair Motors will equip Emirates Transport staff with essential skills for operating and maintaining these advanced vehicles, ensuring that the infrastructure to support this transition is robust and effective.

Dominic Hagerty, Emirates Transport’s Chief Transport and Lease Officer, aptly stated that this MoU heralds a new era of collaboration towards eco-friendly transportation solutions. The partnership’s focus on aligning with governmental sustainability goals exemplifies a proactive approach to policy development and infrastructure advancement, reinforcing the UAE’s dedication to environmental stewardship and economic diversification.

Oscar Rivoli, CEO of Al Ghurair Motors, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the importance of integrating advanced sustainable vehicles into the UAE’s transportation framework. The collaborative efforts of both entities will facilitate the establishment of necessary infrastructure, including electric vehicle charging stations and hydrogen fueling technology, ultimately ensuring seamless integration into the existing fleet.
