NEW DELHI: DP World and Reliance Industries have introduced a new rail-based logistics solution to transport petrochemical products, replacing long-haul road transport with a more sustainable and efficient rail network.

Dubai-based DP World said the new system connects Reliance’s Jamnagar plant in Gujarat to its inland container depot (ICD) in Ahmedabad, with further movement to the port of Mundra.

Previously, each container made a 700-km round trip by road between Mundra and Jamnagar. Now, the Ahmedabad-Jamnagar-Mundra route – also spanning approximately 700 km – has been fully converted to rail, eliminating road transport-related inefficiencies.

The shift enables the movement of up to 1,260 tonnes of cargo in a single journey, consolidating as many as 45 containers at once.

This transition reduces the reliance on multiple trailers and drivers, improving supply chain efficiency.

By cutting over 700 km of road transport per container, the solution significantly lowers carbon emissions, aligning with Reliance’s sustainability objectives.

Ganesh Raj, Global COO of DP World Marine Services, said the initiative enhances efficiency, coordination, and timely exports while supporting Reliance’s sustainability commitments.

Ravikumar Nair, Head of SCM Operations – Petchem at Reliance, noted that the transition to rail has streamlined operations, reduced environmental impact, and eliminated the need for 45 road trailers per trip, reinforcing the company’s focus on responsible supply chain management.
