NEW DELHI: Emphasising the importance and relevance of Constitution in today’s world, Dr Justice DY Chandrachud said the Constitution is a powerful tool that can curb inequalities and create institutions and structures that can guard against inequalities in the system
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) made the powerful statement while talking at the 13th Convocation Ceremony of O.P. Jindal Global University.
“The Constitution provides for checks and balances within these institutions and also stipulates institutional priorities and obligations towards citizens of the country,” he further added.
Wisdom of farmers
The CJI made a poignant observation by stating, “Constitutional longevity speaks to the wisdom of our framers, who were prescient enough to incorporate grounding elements into the Constitution without making it into a rigid normative, but a brittle document,”
The CJI said the Constitution, while being a sturdy foundation for the country’s democracy, is also sufficiently flexible at the same time.
He said in reality, justice primarily means different things in different contexts, and is able to take a compassionate eye to spot injustices around them.
Nearly 3100 students graduate from 10 diverse schools of the University, including Law, Banking & Finance, Public Health Environment, Business, Behavioural Sciences, Psychology, Art & Architecture, Journalism, Liberal Arts & Humanities, Government & Public Policy and International Affairs, attended the 13th Convocation of O.P.
