NEW DELHI: Ashok Leyland has successfully secured a substantial order for 500 electric buses from the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai.

Announced on October 24, 2024, the initiative underscores the growing commitment to electric mobility in urban transit systems. The order is notable not only for its size but also for its innovative approach to addressing the challenges of urban commuting while promoting environmental sustainability.

The buses, specifically the 12-metre ultra-low floor Switch EiV12 model, will be supplied by Switch Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland dedicated to electric vehicle solutions.

Of the total order, 400 buses will be non-air-conditioned, while 100 will feature climate control, thereby catering to diverse passenger comfort preferences. With a seating capacity of 37 and additional standing space for 24 passengers, these buses are designed to accommodate a significant number of commuters, thereby enhancing the capacity of Chennai’s public transport network.

The operational strategy outlined in the contract indicates that Ashok Leyland’s arm, OHM Global Mobility, will manage the operation and maintenance of these vehicles over a period of 12 years.

The long-term partnership reflects a strategic approach to not only provide reliable transport but also to support the infrastructure surrounding electric mobility, ensuring that the transition to cleaner energy sources is effectively realised.

Sustainable transport solutions

The electric buses, boasting a range of over 200 kilometres per charge, exemplify the technological advancements in electric vehicle design and production. This initiative aligns with Ashok Leyland’s broader vision of fostering sustainable transport solutions, as emphasised by MD and CEO Shenu Agarwal.

By declaring their commitment to this transition, Agarwal indicates a proactive stance in creating more efficient, environmentally friendly public transport systems.

Moreover, the successful acquisition of this contract contributes to Switch Mobility’s growing portfolio, which already includes over 950 operational vehicles and an extensive order book exceeding 2,000 units.

The momentum not only enhances Ashok Leyland’s position in the electric vehicle market but also serves as a catalyst for further innovation and investment in sustainable mobility solutions.
