CHENNAI: Aptiv, the renowned Irish automotive technology provider, has opened the doors to a state-of-the-art Advanced Safety & User Experience (AS/UX) technical centre in Chennai, India.

Covering an impressive 3,158 square meters, the latest addition marks the company’s fourth technical centre in the country and is projected to employ 500 engineers by 2026.

What makes this new facility a game-changer is its suite of cutting-edge laboratories and rigorous testing infrastructure, all purpose-built to catalyse breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and critical safety systems.

The centre’s mission? To shape cutting-edge technologies that elevate both driver safety and in-cabin user experience across vehicles designed for both Indian and global markets.

Aptiv’s Chennai technical centre is strategically designed to answer the escalating needs of Indian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). It will focus on the development of advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) perception tools, next-gen in-cabin sensing solutions, and software-driven infotainment platforms.

Importantly, the centre will leverage Wind River’s robust cloud-native and edge technology—Wind River being a notable Aptiv subsidiary—to seamlessly integrate hardware and software for more connected vehicles.

Javed Khan, executive vice president and president for software, advanced safety, and user experience at Aptiv, emphasised the value of proximity: “This centre brings us closer to our customers and underscores our belief in India’s exceptional engineering talent. Enhancing localized AI and machine learning-powered ADAS, along with advanced sensing technologies, is at the heart of our Chennai operations.”

This significant expansion reinforces Aptiv’s growing commitment to the Indian market. The company already boasts a workforce of about 13,000 spread across eight manufacturing plants, four technical centres, and a tooling facility nationwide.

The announcement follows Aptiv’s 2024 commitment of $45 million toward expanding its manufacturing site in Orgadam, Chennai—a testament to its long-term vision for advanced automotive solutions crafted in India for the world.
