UAE seeks to enhance food security with regional cooperation

DOHA: In a world increasingly defined by its interdependencies, the importance of cooperation among nations, particularly in combating shared challenges, cannot be overstated.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi, the Minister of Climate Change and the Environment for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), articulated this vision during her participation in the 36th Ministerial Meeting of the Agricultural and Food Security Committee of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held in Qatar.

In her address, Al Dahak underscored the critical alignment of the UAE’s aspirations with those of other GCC member states, particularly concerning the pressing issue of food security—a concern that resonates deeply across the region.

Al Dahak’s remarks were framed within the context of the UAE’s ongoing efforts to enhance agricultural resilience and food security in the face of significant challenges such as water scarcity and arable land limitations.

By promoting harmonised policies and practices among GCC countries, Al Dahak stressed the need for collective action to address these challenges effectively.

The GCC General Secretariat’s initiatives aimed at fostering regional integration were acknowledged as vital steps towards creating a cohesive approach to food security, which necessitates the removal of obstacles and the establishment of a shared vision.

Proactive approach

Al Dahak emphasised the nation’s commitment to bridging gaps between sustainable agriculture and food security, highlighting the pivotal role of modern agricultural technologies.

The emphasis on research and development is particularly notable, as it aims to ensure sustainable production and diversify food sources, ultimately contributing to a more resilient food system.

The proactive approach serves not only to strengthen national capabilities but also to fortify regional collaborations within the GCC framework.

The challenges faced by GCC nations in agriculture necessitate a cooperative stance, according to Al Dahak.

“The shared adversities of water scarcity and limited agricultural lands can catalyze collaborative efforts that leverage sustainable practices. By sharing expertise and aligning policies across nations, GCC member states are positioned to enhance their agricultural sectors collectively.”

Al Dahak’s invitation for GCC countries to participate in the inaugural World Food Security Summit in Abu Dhabi in November 2024 reflects a commitment to fostering dialogue and collaboration at the highest levels, stimulating innovative solutions for global food security challenges.

Furthermore, the outcomes of the 36th Ministerial Meeting, including the endorsement of the GCC Food Security Strategy, showcase a unified approach to building a resilient Gulf capacity capable of withstanding crises.

The adoption of the GCC Guide for the Collection and Transport of Animal Samples exemplifies the commitment to international standards and the safeguarding of animal health—a critical component of a secure food supply chain.
