MUMBAI: The public sector petroleum company, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Mumbai Port Authority and the Mumbai Port Sustainability Foundation (MPSF) to create a green fuel ecosystem at Mumbai Port.
This agreement marks a significant step in India’s transition to cleaner energy solutions, with a focus on green fuel innovations aimed at drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the country’s climate goals, according to a BPCL statement.
Green infrastructure
The MoU also explores converting diesel-powered vessels to cleaner fuel alternatives, enhancing the port’s green infrastructure and minimisng its carbon footprint.
The formalisation of the agreement took place during the launch of the Cruise Bharat Mission by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, earlier this week at Mumbai Port.
EV charging stations
As part of the initiative, BPCL and Mumbai Port will jointly establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, promoting the adoption of green energy for port users and the general public.
This MoU aligns with BPCL’s commitment to a sustainable future, including the goal of achieving net zero emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2040.
“Our focus on sustainable energy solutions like LNG and EVs in the maritime sector reflects our dedication to social responsibility and sustainable growth in partnership with the communities we serve,” stated G. Krishna Kumar, Chairman & Managing Director of BPCL.
The agreement also addresses waste management, with BPCL and MPSF collaborating on systems for the segregation, storage, and handling of recyclable and non-recyclable solid waste at Mumbai Port, promoting environmentally responsible practices for a cleaner operational environment.
