NEW DELHI: In a sweeping crackdown on non-compliant consumer products, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has raided Amazon and Flipkart warehouses across multiple cities, seizing thousands of uncertified goods, including electrical appliances and footwear.

In a 15-hour raid on March 19, BIS officials confiscated over 3,500 electrical products – such as geysers and food mixers – worth approximately Rs70 lakh from an Amazon Sellers Pvt Ltd warehouse in Delhi’s Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area. Another operation at Instakart Services, Flipkart’s logistics arm, led to the seizure of 590 pairs of sports shoes lacking mandatory manufacturing marks, valued at Rs6 lakh.

The BIS, India’s national standards body, has ramped up enforcement in recent weeks, conducting similar raids in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Lucknow, and Sriperumbudur. Earlier this month, uncertified toys, hand blenders, and kitchenware were confiscated from Amazon and Flipkart warehouses in Gurugram and Lucknow.

With 769 products requiring compulsory BIS certification, authorities have warned that manufacturing, importing, or selling uncertified goods is strictly prohibited. The ongoing crackdown underscores the government’s push to enforce quality standards and protect consumers from substandard products.
