Air Kerala takes off; Kochi announced as primary base

Inaugural flight of Air Kerala, state's only homegrown airline, expected by mid-2025

KOCHI:  In a landmark development for Kerala’s aviation sector, Air Kerala has announced Cochin International Airport (COK) as its primary base of operations.

This decision marks a significant milestone as the state’s first airline prepares to redefine regional connectivity and bolster economic growth. The inaugural flight is slated to take off by the end of May 2025 or early June 2025, heralding a new era of affordable and accessible air travel for residents and tourists alike.

The establishment of Air Kerala is expected to create 750 direct and indirect job opportunities in its first year, strengthening the state’s aviation ecosystem and fostering local talent. As an ultra-low-cost carrier, the airline aims to bridge the affordability gap, targeting a broad customer base, including those who traditionally rely on buses and trains for intercity travel.

Air Kerala Chairman Afi Ahmed expressed confidence in Kerala’s potential as an aviation hub, stating that the choice of Kochi as the airline’s base reflects a commitment to leveraging the state’s strategic advantages. He emphasised that Air Kerala’s operations would contribute significantly to regional growth and global connectivity.

Air Kerala is also poised to boost the state’s tourism industry by improving connectivity and convenience for global travelers. With its vision of offering affordable fares and accessible routes, the airline seeks to attract tourists eager to explore Kerala’s rich culture, scenic beauty, and warm hospitality.

The announcement event was attended by key dignitaries, who expressed their optimism for the airline’s potential to drive economic growth and enhance Kerala’s standing as a global tourism hub. P Rajeeve, the Minister of Industries, Law, and Coir, called the airline’s establishment a proud moment for Kerala, emphasising its role in creating jobs, improving connectivity, and promoting tourism.

Chairman Afi Ahmed highlighted the strategic importance of selecting Kochi as the airline’s base, reflecting confidence in the city’s potential as a leading aviation hub. CEO Harish Kutty shared the airline’s mission to transform air travel in Kerala, promising affordable fares and unmatched service to convert ground travelers into air passengers.

Kochi is Air Kerala’s base

Cochin International Airport Director Manu G welcomed Air Kerala’s decision to base its operations in Kochi and assured full support to ensure the airline’s success. He emphasised that the partnership would bring improved services and greater convenience to passengers.

Leaders from various sectors, including Members of Parliament Hibi Eden and Haris Beeran and MLA Anwar Sadath, lauded the initiative, describing it as a transformative step for Kerala’s aviation and tourism industries. They underscored the airline’s potential to address critical connectivity gaps within the state and beyond.

As Air Kerala prepares for its inaugural flight in mid-2025, its vision aligns with Kerala’s aspirations for growth, connectivity, and accessibility.
