KOLKATA: India’s civil aviation sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade, establishing itself as a formidable player on the global stage. Union Minister K. Rammohan Naidu has recently articulated the government’s ambitious vision of transforming India into the premier domestic aviation hub globally.

The goal is underpinned by a trajectory of expansion that has seen a significant increase in both the number of airports and passenger traffic across the nation.

At an event commemorating the 100-year anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, Naidu highlighted the achievements of the civil aviation sector, noting that India has now become the third-largest domestic aviation market in the world.

The achievement is emblematic of the sector’s robust growth, fostered under the leadership of the Prime Minister, which has seen the breaking of previously established barriers and the expansion of services.

One of the pivotal initiatives aiding this growth has been the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. The revolutionary program has democratised air travel in India, allowing millions of citizens to take to the skies through thousands of flights over the last eight years. The government recognises the profound impact that a well-functioning civil aviation sector has on broader economic growth and job creation, positioning it as a catalyst for development.

Looking ahead, the minister emphasised the need for sustained momentum to elevate the sector to new heights. The aspiration to become the leading global domestic aviation hub within the next five years presents both an opportunity and a challenge, necessitating strategic initiatives and investments.

The focus on expanding infrastructure and enhancing connectivity will be paramount in achieving this goal.
