MUMBAI: Noel Naval Tata, 66, has been appointed as the new chairman of Tata Trusts, following the passing of his half-brother, Ratan Tata, on October 9, 2024.
Noel’s appointment on October 11, 2024, marks a significant leadership shift at the helm of Tata Trusts, which controls a 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group.
Noel Tata, who has been a trustee in four of the trusts that make up Tata Trusts, is a long-time veteran of the Tata Group and holds key leadership positions within several of its companies.
His appointment holds substantial importance given Tata Trusts’ dominant influence over Tata Sons, the heart of the century-old conglomerate, which spans industries from steel to software to consumer goods.
The appointment comes in the wake of Ratan Tata’s death, a titan in Indian business who expanded the Tata empire into a global conglomerate during his tenure. Ratan Tata had retired as chairman of Tata Sons in 2012, after which Cyrus Mistry, a member of the Shapoorji Pallonji family and brother-in-law to Noel Tata, was appointed as his successor.
Cyrus Mistry’s case
However, Mistry’s leadership was short-lived as he was ousted from the position in 2016 following a high-profile and widely publicized boardroom dispute. Mistry tragically died in a car accident in 2022.
Noel Tata’s personal ties with the Shapoorji Pallonji family further add to the complex dynamics within Tata Sons. His wife, Aloo Tata, is the daughter of the late Pallonji Mistry, and sister to both the late Cyrus Mistry and Shapoorji Mistry, the chairman of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
The Shapoorji Pallonji Group holds an 18 per cent stake in Tata Sons, making it one of the largest shareholders alongside Tata Trusts. Noel Tata himself is known for his understated and low-profile leadership style.

He is currently the chairman of Tata International and Tata Investment Corporation Ltd. He also serves on the boards of various Tata Group companies, including as chairman of Trent, Tata International Ltd, Voltas, and Tata Investment Corporation.
Additionally, he holds the position of vice-chairman at Tata Steel and Titan Company Ltd Noel has been associated with the Tata Group for over 40 years, continuing to shape its retail, international business, and investment arms.
Noel Tata’s educational background includes a degree from Sussex University, UK, and the International Executive Programme (IEP) from INSEAD.
His leadership at Tata Trusts will be closely watched, especially given the role of trustees like Vijay Singh and Venu Srinivasan, who have held influential positions within the trusts.
Noel Tata’s children – Leah Tata, Maya Tata, and Neville Tata – are also trustees in various Tata Trusts, continuing the family’s deep involvement in the philanthropic arm that guides the direction of Tata Sons.
With Noel Tata at the helm of Tata Trusts, he now oversees the largest stake in Tata Sons, cementing his significant role in the governance of the Tata Group, a conglomerate that is over 150 years old and remains one of India’s most respected business empires.
