NEW DELHI: Tata Motors Ltd reported a 15 per cent decline in total domestic sales, with 69,694 units sold in September, compared with 82,023 units in the same month last year.

Passenger vehicle (PV) sales, including electric vehicles (EVs), stood at 41,063 units, down 8 per cent from 44,809 units in September 2023, according to a statement from the company.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, said that the  PV industry in Q2 FY25 witnessed over a 5 per cent decline in retail sales (Vahan registrations) compared with Q2 FY24, driven by sluggish consumer demand and seasonal factors.

Strong start

“However, industry offtake was significantly higher than registrations, as businesses anticipated a strong start to the festive season, leading to continued channel stock buildup,” Chandra added.

Commercial vehicle (CV) sales in the domestic market also saw a decline, with 28,631 units sold in September, a 23 per cent drop from 37,214 units in the same month last year.

Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors Ltd, noted that domestic CV sales for the second quarter of FY25 totaled 79,931 units, down 19 per cent from Q2 FY24.

He attributed the slowdown to delayed infrastructure projects, reduced mining activity, and lower fleet utilisation due to heavy rainfall, all of which dampened demand.
