THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala’s Onam festivities triggered a record-breaking growth in liquor sales, with BEVCO, the state-owned sole liquor tender toasting a massive Rs818.21 crore in revenue.
The ever-increasing liquor sales in the state have certainly boosted the spirits of the government, underscoring that alcohol remains a vital lifeline for Kerala.
The 12-day festival saw Keralites stocking up on their favorite spirits, underscoring just how deeply alcohol is woven into the real spirit of the state’s biggest celebration.
‘Uthrada pachil’ in Full spirits
On Uthradam, the day before Thiruvonam, BEVCO outlets across the state were buzzing with activity, and several set new records for sales.
In a surprising twist, the Asramam outlet in Kollam stole the show with a whopping Rs115.41 lakh in sales, dethroning Chalakudy, which has traditionally held the top spot.
Dip in sales
Close behind was Karunagappally, also in Kollam, with Rs115.03 lakh in sales.
Though the overall sales hit new highs, there was a slight dip in Uthradam day numbers compared with last year, with Rs704.06 crore in sales compared with Rs715.97 crore in 2023.
Still, the demand for liquor during Onam has proven to be a cash cow for the state-run Kerala State Beverages Corporation with the season delivering a major boost to the state’s coffers.
