DUBAI: Among the vanguards of AI technological revolution stands Dubai, poised to emerge as a premier global AI hub, due to the visionary initiatives of the government and the collaborative efforts of the private sector.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, underscored Dubai’s ascension as an indispensable nexus for AI developers, startups, and companies worldwide. Speaking at the AI Retreat 2024 event in Dubai, which drew over 2,500 esteemed UAE leaders, AI experts, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, Al Olama said that the pivotal role of Dubai in fostering conversations on AI legislation, policy, ethics, and talent cultivation.

Central to Dubai’s AI ambition is the strategic deployment of Chief AI Officers across government departments, a move aimed at spearheading a proactive, future-oriented AI model.

“These officers, meticulously selected for their expertise, are instrumental in advancing Dubai’s AI vision and ensuring the emirate’s competitiveness in the global AI landscape.”

Furthermore, the government’s commitment to training one million skilled engineers underscores its foresight in nurturing a robust talent pipeline crucial for sustaining AI-driven growth.

Impact on economy

Dubai’s steadfast commitment to AI has not gone unnoticed, with the UAE ranking third globally in attracting AI talent relative to its population size. This remarkable feat, coupled with the nation’s ascent to 15th place in AI skills globally, underscores Dubai’s emergence as a magnet for top-tier talent and a breeding ground for AI innovation.

Al Olama’s ambitious target of AI contributing 14 per cent to the UAE’s GDP by 2030 reflects the transformative impact AI is poised to have on the country’s economic landscape, unlocking new avenues for productivity and growth.

Looking beyond its borders, the UAE’s AI aspirations are aligned with broader regional ambitions, as highlighted by PwC’s projection of the Middle East accruing significant AI benefits by 2030.

Notably, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are poised to reap substantial economic rewards from AI deployment, underscoring the transformative potential of this technology on the region’s economic fabric. Dubai’s role as a pioneer in AI adoption not only catalyzes economic growth within its borders but also sets a compelling precedent for regional and global AI adoption.
