 NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party seemed to be short of a majority on its own despite having almost the same vote share a last time.
Data shows that the Congress-led opposition bloc, I.N.D.I.A, has been able to consolidate votes, unlike the the last two elections.Â
The loss of seats in Uttar Pradesh came as a big shock for Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a third straight term in office. Similarly, the party was very confident of gaining more seats in West Bengal but it was leading only in 12 seats, compared to the 18 it won in 2019.Â
While the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) still seems set for a majority, political grapevine is ripe with rumours about ongoing discussions between parties in the opposition camp and some of BJP’s partners like the Janata Dal (United) and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led by Chandrababu Naidu. .
